Home Textiles: Types, Classification, and Uses

Home textiles are textile products used inside the home to improve comfort, function, and overall look and feel. They include both decorative and practical items, and they’re made from natural fibres (like cotton, linen, silk, wool) and man-made fibres (like polyester), often blended for strength and durability. Common manufacturing routes include weaving, knitting, crochet, nonwovens, knotting, and fibre-bonding/pressing.

What counts as “home textiles”?

Across most industry and education references, home textiles typically cover categories like bedding, kitchen and bathroom linens, table linens, curtains and drapes, wall hangings, and floor coverings (carpets/rugs).

Key product groups

1) Bedding (bed linens and bedding accessories)
Built for sleep comfort and easy care. Typical items include sheets, pillowcases/covers, pillows, bed skirts, bedspreads, throws, duvets, and comforters.

2) Kitchen textiles
Designed for protection, hygiene, and handling heat. Common items include aprons, dishcloths, pot holders, and oven mitts/gloves.

3) Table textiles
Used for presentation and surface protection. Typical items include tablecloths, runners, placemats/mats, napkins, and table skirting.

4) Bathroom textiles
Focused on absorbency and safety. Common items include bath towels, face towels, bath mats, and bath rugs.

5) Curtains, drapes, and wall décor
Helps with privacy, light control, and style. This group includes curtains/draperies plus decorative wall textiles such as tapestries and wall hangings.

6) Floors and floor coverings
Adds warmth, comfort underfoot, and can help reduce dust and noise. This includes carpets, rugs, and other soft floor coverings.

What customers notice first

When home textiles are displayed (as fabric lengths or finished furnishings), people typically judge three things at once: colour, design, and texture/hand feel.
